The Vietnam War…

For me, (being born in the midst of the conflict) what I know of it comes from what I’ve read in history books, personal research and first hand accounts from both civilians on the home front and from the men who found themselves in a foreign land fighting a foreign enemy; fighting for their lives and the lives of their brothers in arms.  These Zippo lighters tell a story, both personal and shared views of the entire mess this conflict was.enhanced-buzz-19350-1345143705-0

After viewing these iconic pieces of history and reading the sentiments inscribed by the men who carried them into battle–most of them not happy to be there made it known by their inscriptions–I was compelled to learn the number of these men who were there willingly vs. the number of those “forced” to fight by the US govt. (by way of the draft.) Well, I found what I was looking for and the numbers are as follows:

  • 25% (648,500) Of total forces in country were draftees.

  • Draftees accounted for 30.4% (17,725) of combat deaths in Vietnam.

  • Total draftees (1965-73):  1,728,344.

  • Actually served in Vietnam 38%.

  • Marine Corps Draft: 42,633

  • Last man drafted June 30,  1973.

  • Vietnam Vets: 9.7% of their generation

  • 9,087,000 Military personnel served on active duty during the Vietnam Era.  Aug. 5,  1964 – May 7,  1975.

  • 8,744,000 GIs Were on active duty during the war. Aug. 5,  1964 – March 28, 1973

I will be referring to this site in the future, as it gives perspective to the wars the US has found itself in.  Before I link you to the rest of the collection of Zippo lighters, I’d like to share the following numbers. They represent the caliber of men we sent into battle; I hold them all in the highest regard, and extend a humble thank you to those living and those who gave all.  Semper Fi warriors. I will never forget. ~Anna

  • 97% Of Vietnam Era Veterans were honorably discharged.

  • 91% Of actual Vietnam War Veterans and 90% of those who saw heavy combat are proud to have served their country.

  • 66% Of Vietnam Vets say they would serve again if called upon.

  • 87% Of the public now holds Vietnam Veterans in high esteem.
