Jean Moore kneels and kisses her fiancé, wheelchair-bound World War II veteran Ralph Neppel, who wears a Congressional Medal of Honor given to him by President Harry Truman, at the White House, Washington DC, 1945.
In 1943 Ralph Neppel joined the United States Army. During a German counter-attack his legs were severely wounded, but he continued to man his machine-gun throughout the day. His legs were later amputated and he received the Congressional Medal of Honor. For Jean Moore, and many women like her, it was a relief to have her fiancé home even if he was wounded.
