So many were sent

far across the pond

when the world was in chaos

and we chose to respond.

they died in the trenches

and crossed the wire

charging the enemy

and facing the fire.

the Argonne is silent now

many decades have passed

when the ground was bloody

and the air-filled with gas.

the grave stones are fading

from the wind and the rain

where the young men were laid

after battlefields of pain.

with the passing of Buckles

all the doughboys are gone

now only their memoirs

are left to live on.

the Great War’s history

has closed its pages

now all of those heroes

are part of the ages.
